Cubic Automotive CO2 Gas Sensor Solution

Nowadays, vehicle has become the "third space" in life, except home and office. People are paying more attention to vehicle cabin air quality.

While driving, particulate matter from the road will enter the vehicle and pollute the air inside, which will be harmful to the health of passengers. Therefore, particulate matter needs to be removed. More and more drivers choose to close the windows and turn on the recirculation mode to filter out harmful impurities in the air. However, continuous recirculation mode will lead to a significant increase in CO2 in vehicles. The research shows that in recirculation mode, with three people in the cabin, the CO2 level increases rapidly, reaching 4500 ppm in less than 15 minutes. ASHARE standards specify that for fresh air to be beneficial to human health and comfort, the CO2 concentration should be kept below 1000 ppm. High concentration level of CO2 will make people feel uncomfortable, or even impair the health of people. When CO2 concentration reaches 5000ppm, it will cause headaches, lethargy, moodiness, mental slowness, or emotional irritation, which have adverse impact on the safety of the occupants in the vehicles during driving on road. Hence, it is essential to reduce the CO2 concentration in vehicles.

In order to reduce the CO2 concentration in vehicle, the driver will turn on the external circulation mode and bring in fresh air from the outside. However, the external circulation mode consumes more energy than the recirculation mode. Thus, it is necessary to adopt vehicle intelligent DCV system to switch between external circulation mode and recirculation mode, according to in-cabin CO2 concentration. When it is detected that the in-cabin CO2 concentration exceeds the set threshold (normally 1000ppm), the external circulation mode will be activated, bringing fresh air into the vehicle to reduce the CO2 concentration. When it is detected that the in-cabin CO2 concentration is within the normal range, the recirculation mode will be activated, thereby saving energy. Therefore, it is essential to adopt high-precision CO2 sensors for accurate CO2 concentration measurement to help achieve effective switching between external circulation and recirculation mode while driving on road.

To provide reliable CO2 sensor solution for automotive industry, Cubic, a leading manufacturer of smart gas sensors and an Automotive Tier1 Supplier with automotive-grade quality management system, has developed a NDIR technology-based CO2 sensor ACDS-1001, which is an ideal choice for automotive-grade CO2 concentration detection.
