Cubic Thermal Runaway Detection Solution for Lithium Battery Energy Storage Stations

Lithium-ion batteries are currently widely used in the field of energy storage. The high risk of fires and explosions of lithium-ion batteries at energy storage stations has raised significant concerns about the safety of electrochemical energy storage facilities.

Lithium-ion batteries serve as the energy carriers for the energy storage stations, with their electrode system components possessing a high level of potential thermal hazards, which can lead to lithium-ion battery thermal runaway events. In energy storage stations, clusters of lithium-ion batteries are densely arranged in pre-built storage rooms. Once a single lithium battery begins to be out of control and gradually heat up, such close arrangements of lithium-ion batteries are susceptible to the uncontrolled spread of heat, which easily leads to fires and explosions.

Considering the safety risks of thermal runaway events in energy storage stations, Cubic, a leading manufacturer of gas sensors and analyzers, has developed thermal runaway monitoring sensors based on its core gas sensor technology to provide real-time monitoring of gases (CO2/CO/HC/H2), electrolyte vapor (DMC/EMC/EC), pressure, particles, and other indicators released in the very early stage of thermal runaway to provide early alarm in time.

Cubic adopts NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) technology for CO2 concentration measurement and electrolyte vapor (DMC/EMC/EC) measurement, MEMS TCD (thermal conductivity) technology for H2 measurement, MEMS MOX technology for CO/HC/H2 measurement, and LSD (light scattering) technology to achieve wide range measurement for particles. Cubic lithium-ion battery thermal runaway sensors can precisely detect the concentration of off-gas and smoke, which are released from the very early stage to the late stage of thermal runaway events. Cubic lithium-ion battery thermal runaway sensors can also monitor the change of temperature and pressure.

Based on these advanced technologies, Cubic lithium-ion battery thermal runaway sensors are designed with valuable features.

- Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology adopted for fast response CO2 concentration measurement and electrolyte vapor (DMC/EMC/EC) measurement

- Thermal conductivity (TCD) technology adopted for high reliability of H2 measurement

- Effective and accurate measurement for thermal runaway early warning

- Fast response with no false alarm

- Integrated sensor measures both CO2, CO, HC, H2, and temperature

- Self-made key components to ensure quality and on-time delivery

With the features of fast response and early warning, Cubic thermal runaway sensors can be effectively integrated into energy storage stations to monitor and detect early signs of battery anomalies, to help reduce the risks of fires and explosions and maintain the operational safety of energy storage systems.
