Cubic Complete A2L& A3 Refrigerant Gas Sensing Solutions In HVAC and Heat Pump Industries

The HVAC industry is transitioning to lower global warming potential refrigerants under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020, which phases down older refrigerants and sets new standards for air conditioners and heat pumps. As part of this transition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set transition dates for new equipment required to use new refrigerants, commonly referred to as A2L & A3 refrigerants.

Residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps

- Must use the new refrigerant if manufactured after Jan. 1, 2025.

- Equipment manufactured before this date can be installed until Jan. 1, 2026.

Non-field-assembled products (e.g., window air conditioning units)

- Final sale date set for Jan. 1, 2028.

- No specific installation deadline applies.

In order to meet policy requirements and ensure operational compliance, companies need to switch to using refrigerants with lower GWP before compliance data. However, while low-GWP refrigerants have improved environmental performance, they also put forward higher technical requirements for leakage monitoring and safety management due to their flammability and special operating requirements.

To address these challenges, Cubic develops a comprehensive refrigerant leak monitoring solution designed to meet the needs of diverse applications. Cubic refrigerant gas monitoring portfolio includes refrigerant gas sensors, refrigerant gas detection system, portable refrigerant leak detectors, and laboratory-level refrigerant gas analyzers, offering a complete range of products to ensure safe and efficient refrigerant management.

Cubic Complete Refrigerant Gas Sensing Solutions

- NDIR A2L & A3 Refrigerant Gas Sensors for Precision Leak Detection

Cubic refrigerant leak detection sensors are developed based on advanced NDIR technology, aiming at the detection of A2L and A3 refrigerant gas leakage, including R32, R454A, R454B, R454C and R290 propane, which meets a broader range of application requirement for HVAC and Heat Pump industries.

Cubic NDIR refrigerant gas sensors provide high-precision measurements even at low concentrations, particularly valuable for detecting A3 refrigerant gas, such as propane, which has a lower explosive limit of 2.1% vol, to enable early leak detection and enhance safety and reliability. Cubic NDIR refrigerant gas sensors adopt special hardware structure design and are equipped with unique mathematical algorithm to accurately capture every leak to ensure the efficient and safe application. Cubic mature NDIR technology guarantees the stable operation of sensor for more than 15 years. It only takes few seconds to detect potential leakage risks. Moreover, Cubic NDIR refrigerant gas sensors are well adaptable to complex environments. Whether it is severe cold or heat, or humid environment, Cubic NDIR refrigerant gas sensors can ensure stable performance without condensation and frost.

To fulfill more efficient integration with refrigerant systems, Cubic has also designed NDIR refrigerant gas sensing detection system with mitigation functions, which support more options of 12-24V DC/AC power supply, Modbus and RS485 output, and relay design.

In order to provide customers with reliable assurance, Cubic NDIR A2L and A3 refrigerant gas sensors have already received official UL certification, making Cubic the first gas sensor company in the Asia-Pacific region to acquire the achievement. The success of acquiring UL certification highlights Cubic's excellent commitment to product quality and safety, to provide manufacturers of air conditioners with a UL-certified one-stop solution to meet increasingly stringent refrigerant regulatory requirement

- Portable Refrigerant Gas Leak Detector for After-Sales Maintenance

For after-sales and maintenance scenarios, Cubic offers a lightweight, user-friendly portable refrigerant leak detector. Cubic portable refrigerant gas detector leverages mature NDIR technology to realize multiple refrigerant gas leakage detection. It could be customized to detect HFCs, HFOs and blends refrigerant gases including R32, R290, R410A, R134a, R454A, R454B, R454C, R1234ze, and R1234yf, with the superior features of fast response, ppm-level detection limit, strong anti-interference ability and longer lifespan.

Cubic portable refrigerant gas detector has the design of TFT LCD screen which provides clear and quantitative real-time refrigerant leakage indication. Besides it has multiple indicators (loud beeper alarm & red LED flashes) at the tip to enable detection much easier to track down even minor leakage in various environments. And Cubic portable refrigerant gas detector can be easily recharged and holds a charge for up to 10 hours, benefit from large-capacity batteries and the type-C charging interface.

In the HVAC and industrial inspection fields, Cubic portable refrigerant gas detector provides the most credible and reliable sensing and detection solutions for customers.

- Laboratory Refrigerant Gas Analyzers for Supporting R&D

To support refrigerant research in the laboratories, Cubic designed high-end refrigerant gas analysis instruments, compliant with UL&IEC ANNEX LL and ANNEXX MM testing requirements.

For laboratory and research applications, Cubic refrigerant gas analyzers are tailored for in-depth analysis of refrigerant leaks, including composition, concentration, and trends. Cubic refrigerant gas analyzers adopted advanced multi-point calibration mechanism, which ensures the reliable and precise refrigerant gas measurement over entire measurement range and provides excellent linearity.

Due to superior accuracy performance, Cubic refrigerant gas analyzers could be the reliable reference equipment for bulk production of end users, such as air conditioner and heat pump manufacturers. It also could meet the requirement of precise refrigerant gas leakage detection for laboratory and research institute.

By providing detailed data and comprehensive reports, Cubic refrigerant gas analyzers support the development of refrigerant-related products and help meet stringent regulatory requirements while optimizing their R&D processes.

Through the series of product portfolios from refrigerant leak gas sensors to gas detectors and gas analyzers, Cubic is committed to providing a complete set of solutions to help companies efficiently cope with refrigerant management challenges. Cubic refrigerant products not only meet the requirements of the official standards, but also have high adaptability and scalability to meet the needs of different industries and application scenarios.

In the future, to contribute significantly to global gas safety monitoring and the pursuit of dual-carbon objectives, Cubic will remain resolute in its mission by spearheading innovative gas sensing technologies and will strive to create a safer, more sustainable future towards heightened environmental stewardship and industrial responsibility.
