Cubic Automotive-Standard NOx Sensor Delivers Effective Emission Monitoring And Management

On-road transportation is the main anthropogenic source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) on a global scale (23%) and across Europe (39%, EEA, 2019). NOx, the mixture of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), has a direct impact on human health, in that it acts as a respiratory irritant, aggravating or leading to the development of asthma, emphysema and other respiratory complaints. NOx emissions also lead to the subsequent formation of secondary PM and ground-level ozone in the atmosphere, as well as cause harm to the environment by contributing to the acidification and eutrophication of waters and soils.

Given its substantially environmental impact, governments worldwide have been introducing stricter vehicle emission standards, forcing automakers and components suppliers to innovate in emission control technologies, cutting emissions more effectively and efficiently. In Europe, under the upcoming Euro VII, NOx limits for light-duty vehicles will be tightened to 60 mg/km for both diesel and gasoline passenger cars, while heavy-duty vehicles will face a combined NOx limit of 200 mg/kWh under RDE conditions—a significant reduction from Euro VI. To meet the need of adapting environmental regulation, Cubic delivers automotive-standard NOx sensor, which is effective in terms of functionality and contributory to the emission management and alleviation.

Cubic, as a leading manufacturer of gas sensors and gas analyzers with experience over 20 years, actively engages in the industry dynamics and delivers ahead of time solution for both OEMs and aftermarket players. Having established multiple technology platforms, Cubic commands excelled capability in electrochemical technology, high temperature solid electrolyte technology, ceramic thick-film technology and etc. Immersive R&D and quality control guaranteed advanced products and OEM/ODM development efficiency, with Cubic’s full-chain industrial layout, which spanned from materials to chips, packaging, and electronic control, ensuring a secure and controllable supply chain. For automakers, parts supplier and system integrators, Cubic NOx sensor serves as an ideal choice.

On the principle of oxygen concentration cell, Cubic developed a series of NOx sensor for both motorcycles, petrol vehicles, EVs and diesel vehicles. At the core of Cubic NOx sensor is a self-developed planar electrochemical sensing chip, manufactured using HTCC (High Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic) technology, solid electrolyte ceramics material and NOx-sensitive nanostructured electrodes. The chip integrates a multi-layer sensing element with dual heating wires, offering long-term stability, durability, and incredible NOx selectivity. It’s broad detection range (0–2500 ppm), fast ignition within 10s, and high responsiveness as quick as less than 100ms make it a reliable solution for real-world emission control challenges.

The fully sealed, corrosion-resistant housing offers strong resistance to engine vibration (20–200 Hz), while rigorous environmental testing ensures stable operation in extreme conditions—from -40°C low temperatures to over 800°C heat, and altitudes exceeding 5,000 meters. Cubic NOx sensor supports multiple connector types and integrates seamlessly with most fuel injection systems.

It can be used in the closed-loop control of nitrogen oxides in the SCR system of diesel engines, or in the on-board diagnostics (OBD) of gasoline and diesel engines. The NOx sensor is installed in the exhaust gas flow both upstream and downstream of the SCR catalytic converter, where it continuously monitors the concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) within the exhaust stream. The sensor communicates with the engine management system through the CAN bus, ensuring precise data transmission and real-time feedback.

At the same time, Cubic's automotive exhaust gas solution stands out for its vertically integrated manufacturing process that encompasses in-house development of core components from chips to controller and full sensor assembly. Beside supply chain safety, it also guarantees flexible customization to meet sophisticated needs. Having already acquired the IATF 16949 certificate, Cubic delivers OEMS automotive-grade reliability and durability for NOx sensor manufacturing.

With robust performance, durability, and seamless integration into vehicle management systems and compatibility for a wide range of petrol vehicles and commercial diesel platforms, Cubic’s NOx sensors deliver reliable automotive exhaust emission monitoring solution for automakers and service providers across the automotive industry.
