As urban air pollution continues to worsen, concerns about in-vehicle air quality during driving are growing. In situations including traffic congestion, tunnels, or exposure to exhaust emissions from surrounding vehicles, automotive AC operating in external circulation mode will bring polluted air to enter the cabin, negatively impacting passenger health and driving comfort. To ensure a healthy, safe, and comfortable cabin environment, modern vehicles are equipped with reliable air quality sensors that continuously monitor external conditions and intelligently adjust the HVAC system, automatically switching between external circulation and recirculation modes when necessary.
To address the increasing market need, Cubic, an Automotive Tier 1, leveraged its mature R&D and manufacturing expertise in gas sensors and analyzers to develop the automotive-grade Air Quality Sensor (AQS), AQM-1020, designed specifically for monitoring external air quality and supporting intelligent HVAC control systems. It is engineered not only for reliability but also for batch production at low cost, ensuring that large-scale OEM deployments can be realized without compromising performance.
Cubic AQM-1020 is based on MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) metal oxide semiconductor (MOX) technology, which detects oxidizing and reducing gases in the environment, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and ammonia (NH3), along with various other gases, through semiconductor redox reactions. The sensor classifies air quality levels based on gas concentrations and incorporates internal diagnostics and data validation to ensure stable and reliable output for vehicle air management. Using the LIN interface, the sensor transmits real-time air quality data to the vehicle ECU, enabling intelligent HVAC control to automatically adjust external and internal circulation.
In terms of technical design, AQM-1020 features self-developed core components, including a micro hot plate, gas-sensitive materials, and chip packaging, which supports streamlined batch assembly to further lower costs for OEM adoption. Combined with advanced intelligent differential algorithms, the sensor can accurately identify multiple target gases and supports up to 64 channels, maintaining high selectivity and stability even in complex environmental conditions. To address potential sensor drift over long-term use, it incorporates intelligent sensitivity compensation, automatic baseline correction, and anti-siloxane technologies, ensuring consistent and reliable performance over time.
AQM-1020 delivers reliable measurement to effectively reflect external air quality even under challenging road and environmental conditions. It provides continuous real-time output to support vehicle air quality monitoring. It operates reliably in temperatures from -40 to +85°C and 0–95% RH (non-condensing). Its compact size design make it easy to integrate into a variety of automotive platforms.
With its automotive-grade product design, Cubic AQM-1020 is suitable for both passenger and commercial vehicles, delivering stable performance across diverse automotive environments. Cubic has acquired the IATF 16949 certification, supported by an automotive-grade quality management system and extensive experience in automated mass production, which ensures that its automotive gas sensors are highly reliable and ready for widespread deployment, offering OEMs a dependable and adaptable air quality sensing solution.
